In 1865, James Henry Hensley, his wife Elizabeth, and their first child moved from Rankin County, Arkansas, and settled near the headwaters of the East Keechi Creek in Jack County. They had five more children after moving to Texas. Mr. Hensley died, and Elizabeth married J. W. Brummet, whom she later divorced. In 1882, she married J. W. Dodson. During this time, Elizabeth held the family together and managed to accumulate a ranch of some 1,600 acres, stocking it with high-grade cattle.
One of Elizabeth’s sons, Henry James Hensley, became a Cowboy, a cattle trader, and ultimately, a rancher, enlarging the ranch to over 8,000 acres. Henry James and his wife, Dorcas Duke Hensley, had one daughter, Willie Ruth Hensley. Willie Ruth grew up in Jacksboro and married Evan Cater Richards. Through purchase and inheritance, Willie Ruth and Evan Cater Richards built the ranch up to its present size today, just over 15,000 acres. Willie Ruth and Evan Cater Richards had four children. Two of them, Henry Richards and Dorcas Hackley, continued in the family business. Mrs. Dorcas Richards Hackley had two children, one son and one daughter. Her son, John Cater Hackley, followed suit into the ranching business. John Cater, and his wife, Charlotte, had two children, one son and one daughter. Their son, John Brentnall Hackley, also has followed his father’s footsteps into the family’s ranching business. Brent and his wife Cindy, have one son, Hunter Eastman Hackley, and one daughter, Hallie Elizabeth Hackley, who makes the seventh generation of family that has loved this land and lived from the benefits of this gorgeous land in Jack County, Texas. From the time the ranch began in 1865 until 1999, it was strictly a cattle operation. In 1999, the decision was made to allow limited amounts of hunting and fishing on the ranch. In 2000, the Ranch expanded to include eco-tourism endeavors. For more information or reservations, contact the Richards Ranch staff.
